“Where is he?” The man’s hooded eyes narrowed slightly. “I’m freezing. You don’t know the journey I’ve made to get here.”
The other man blew into his hands and rubbed them together briskly. “Relax Boris; I came farther than you did. Maybe he’s already inside. Shall we?”

The old man, Malochi Evil by name and nature, stood on the muddy bank moving his hands in slow concentric circles in front of him. He chanted low in his throat, the words barely escaping his lips. The harsh Latin evocation faded with the light breeze that stirred up the stench of the brackish water. His dusky hair, long and wispy, gathered a small electric charge from the air.
The first of the fireflies appeared then, blinking low, close to the water. Their flashing abdomens lightly brushed the water causing tiny ripples before the bugs pulled up again. They were soon joined by tens, then hundreds more lightning bugs until the surface of the water virtually glowed from the combined light. The insects drew close together in a tight knot. Emily Ryder screamed again and her husband held her hand.
“Are you sure you don’t want any drugs?”
Emily nodded; she was determined to have this baby naturally.
The doctor said it was too late for drugs anyway, the babies head was crowning now. It wouldn’t be long at all.
Emily bore down when the doctor told her to. A few more moments and she felt the last of the baby leave her, wet and slippery.
Then all was silent; no doctor saying what it was, no nurses chattering about how cute the baby was, and more to the point no baby crying. Read the rest of this entry »

Millicent hated this section of road, especially at night. During daylight it was bad enough; a winding road through dark, foreboding trees that stretched for miles and miles without any sign of life. But at night it’s a different world altogether, some evil alien landscape. Night is when ‘they’ come out. Millicent tried to focus on the road ahead, to where the yellow line switched and played across the tarmac, but her eyes kept finding their way back to the edge of the road where ‘they’ lurked.
She thought she saw… no, nothing there. Her eyes back to the road. “Concentrate Millie,” she thought. “Don’t give in to them.”
She felt their eyes on her now. A quick glance to the side. Yes, there ‘they’ are, just as she knew they would be. Her gaze stuck to the side of the road, just at the outer edge of the cars lights. The demons of the shadows. Read the rest of this entry »
